Some of my most fun improvisation comes from working with flowers and a flashlight in a totally black room, sometimes at 4:00 in the morning.  Most shots don't "work", but occasionally they do by virtue of how I work the flashlight, from which angle, plus length of opening aperture. When they work, it is wonderful...exciting!
